젊음(YOUTH), 가슴을 뛰게하는 詩

(제가 좋아하는 시 입니다.)

 

이 시가 널리 알려지게 한 데는 맥아더 장군의 공이 컸다고 합니다. 장군이 일본 도꾜에 머물 때

자기 사무실에 얼만의 "젊음(Youth)"이라는 시를 늘 벽에 걸어놓았고, 자신의 연설에서 그 시

구절을 자주 인용하였다는 것입니다. 일본인들이 특히 이 시를 좋아하게 된 것은 바로 맥아더

장군을 통해서라고 합니다. 그러나 그 뒤로도 이 시는 다른 많은 사업가, 정치가, 장군들에 의해

자주 인용되고, Dear Abby나 Ann Landers의 컬럼에도 자주 등장함으로써 세계적으로 널리

알려지게 되었습니다.

제게는 지금 미국 LA에 살고 계시는 외삼촌께서 소개해 주셨습니다.

 

 

Youth Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young. 젊음 젊음은 인생의 시기가 아니오, 마음의 상태이다. 그것은 장밋빛 볼과 붉은 입술과 유연한 무릎의 문제가 아니오, 의지와 탁월한 상상력과 활력에 찬 감정이 있느냐의 문제이다. 삶의 깊은 샘이 신선하면 그것이 바로 젊음이다. 젊음이란 기질이 소심하기보다 용기에 넘치고, 수월함을 좋아하기보다 모험의 욕구가 강한 것. 이것은 때로 스무 살의 청년보다 예순의 노인에게도 있는 법이다. 나이를 먹는다고 그것만으로 늙는 것은 아니다. 이상(理想)을 버림으로써 우리는 늙어갈 뿐이다. 세월은 살결을 주름지게 할지 모르나 열정을 포기하면 정신에 주름에 생긴다. 걱정, 두려움, 자기 불신이 심장을 꺾고 정신을 흙으로 돌아가게 만든다. 예순이든 열 여섯이든 인간의 가슴에는 저마다 경이의 유혹과 미래에 대한 쇠진하지 않는 천진한 욕망과 삶의 놀이를 즐기는 흥겨움이 있다. 그대와 나의 가슴 한 가운데에는 하나의 무선국(無線局)이 있으니, 그것이 사람들로부터 조물주로부터 아름다움과 희망과 활기와 용기와 힘의 메시지를 수신하는 한, 그대는 영원히 젊으리라. 안테나가 내려진 채, 그대의 영혼이 냉소의 눈과 염세(厭世)의 얼음으로 뒤덮이게 되면, 스무 살이라 할지라도 그대는 늙었다 할 것이나, 그대의 안테나가 드높이 솟아 낙관(樂觀)의 전파를 붙잡는다면 여든이라 할지라도 그대는 젊음을 유지한 채 죽을 수 있으리라.
